From Dust Bunnies to Golden Fluff – Happy Spring Cleaning

Why Do We All Get Spring Cleaning Fever? (And Why It’s Not Just About Dust Bunnies or Golden Fluff 🐕 )

So ya, i don’t know about you guys but this weird thing happens to me every spring.

The moment I see the first crocus poking out of the ground, something inside me snaps. Suddenly, I’m on a mission. Closets, cupboards, even that drawer where old batteries and random screws go to die — it’s all gotta go.

Steve hates this spring cleaning season. I reorganize so well I forget where I put some of it. 💁‍♀️

And I know I’m not alone, because every woman I know gets the same twitchy look in her eye when spring hits. So what is this madness? Why do we suddenly want to flip the whole house upside down like we’re auditioning for Extreme Makeover: Menopause Edition?

It’s Not Just You – It’s Science (Apparently)

Turns out, there’s a reason we all get a little unhinged when the sun comes out. When spring arrives, our bodies pump out less melatonin (the snooze hormone) and more serotonin (the ‘let’s do this!’ hormone). Add in the fact that we’ve been cooped up all winter and — bam — we’ve got spring fever.

Suddenly, cleaning out the pantry at 2am feels completely reasonable. Who knew science was so supportive of late-night label making?

Blame Our Ancestors (And Maybe Our Mothers)

Way back when, spring cleaning wasn’t just about fresh starts — it was about survival. After a winter of heating homes with wood, coal, or whatever else they could burn, everything was covered in a fine layer of “ew.” So, come spring, the windows got thrown open, the brooms came out, and the scrubbing began. This is around the same time Steve would like me to get on my broom and fly!  🧹

And because women traditionally ran the home front, this annual cleanse got handed down like a family heirloom, right along with recipes for potato salad and chocolate chip cookies. Lucky us!

Why Women Feel It Most (It’s Not Just the Cleaning Gene)

Here’s the real tea 🫖 : for a lot of us, our homes are like an extension of our brain. If the house feels chaotic, our minds do too. That’s why decluttering a drawer can feel as satisfying as making  plans to meet a friend for lunch .

Spring cleaning isn’t just about dust — it’s about control. It’s about saying, “Okay world, I can’t fix everything, but I can alphabetize my spice rack and suddenly life feels a little more manageable.”

More Than Just Mop and Bucket Therapy

Spring isn’t just about scrubbing — it’s about resetting. And that applies to way more than our closets.

I get bogged down with mental clutter, do you? If your brain’s been running a nonstop to-do list since Christmas, (mine has) maybe it’s time for a little journaling, a fun girls’ night, or just sitting on the deck with a glass of something sparkly — for research purposes, obviously.

Think about it:

• What routines are you ready to toss out like those jeans that haven’t fit since 2009?

• What new habits or hobbies are you dying to try?

• When was the last time you spring cleaned your  schedule AND your mindset.

Spring is basically the universe handing us a giant permission slip to shake things up. And I say, why stop at the junk drawer?

Embrace the Fresh Start (Mess and All)

Here’s the deal — whether you’re deep-cleaning your baseboards, signing up for a class, or just making space (literally and mentally) for what’s next, spring is the perfect time to remind yourself: it’s okay to let go, start fresh, and maybe laugh at the dust bunnies along the way…or in my case, Golden Retriever fluff balls

Cheers to fresh starts, my friend — and maybe a glass of wine when we’re done.

Here’s my  action plan:

Physical Space Reset

– If I haven’t used it in a year, it goes

– Touch an item. Make a decision. No hesitation.

– Create space, create possibility

Mental Space Reset

– Spend 10 minutes journaling about what I want

– Identify one habit I’m ready to change – mine is my nighttime routine. (More about that in a near future blog post)

– Create a small, achievable goal that moves me forward

Emotional Space Reset

– Forgive myself for past clutter (physical and mental)

– Celebrate every single small win

Remember: You are not defined by your stuff. You are defined by your choices – I love this. It is a sort of new mantra for me. I still had my grade 8 grad dress and the kilt I wore in grade 3 for Highland dancing. Why? lol 😝 I had at least 8 pairs of jeans…I wore two regularly.

Here is a challenge for you….

Do one thing today. Just ONE thing that moves you forward:

– Clear out one drawer

– Donate five items

– Write in your journal

– Make one decision that scares you a little

The magic happens when you stop thinking and start doing.

Your life changes not when the conditions are perfect, but when YOU decide it’s time.

Here’s to fresh starts, open windows, and the joy of letting go—one retriever bunny at a time.💕 🐕

Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up; it’s about making space for sunshine, new adventures, and all the good things waiting to bloom. Cheers to a season of lightness and living well, savvy snowbirds! Thanks for being here.

Hahaha..my husband is the exact same. He would prefer I give him a heads up so that he can get the heck out of my way. My ear buds go in and I just get into a good music groove! LOL.

It really is true- last weekend I spent 10 hours cleaning out my closets- 7 hours on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. I didn’t sit down for 7 hours straight and I was ruthless- you can NOT hesitate! I have 5 bags to donate and 59 items for the consignment store!
