Happy Canada Day weekend.
Usually I put my blog out for Sunday morning reading. I thought I would send this one out a day early in case anyone is looking for some super easy, last minute, DIY, Canada Day decor and recipe ideas.
Can you believe it…this is the last weekend of June. I feel like we whipped through this month! What about you?
These photos are from a party we had a few years ago at the corner house.
More photos than chit chat on this blog. I hope you enjoy it. 😉
Nothing says Canada Day or 4th of July like a back yard BBQ. Decor was kept so simple in a red and white theme with DIY napkins and table cloths. If you are doing a 4th of July party you can easily incorporate some blue into this table scheme. The table cloth over-lay is cotton fabric cut to size. I didnt finish the edges. I left them raw. The water bottles are from the dollar store and so are the white plates.
The napkins are small white cotton hand towels with red Pom Pom trim glued to the edge. I have washed these and the glue has held up fine.
For the center pieces I used grocery store flowers and added small Canadian flags from the dollar store.
This salad is called a Dimitri Salad from our local Lord Nelson restaurant. Nick and Suzie have perfected this and love to share their recipe. (BELOW) I could eat this at every meal. It is so light and zesty and made with simple ingredients.
I had these little spoons on hand from an Asian themed shower I have blogged about in the past. It is one of my most visited posts. You can read it HERE. This is so simple to make as an app or as side. I used a fresh basil leaf, half of a cherry tomato, a small mozzarella ball, small amount of shaved parmasene cheese and a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
BBQ burgers, corn on the cob, steak and salads. It was SO hot out on this particular July 1st party. We served all of the food buffet style inside the house.
This is another simple salad. I cut up some orange and red peppers, red onion, tomato’s, cool cucumber and sweet watermelon. I added cubed feta and finished with some olive oil and fresh lime juice. S&P to taste. (Ratio EVOO/Lime = 3tbsp/1tbsp) This is such an easy salad to prepare.
Marilu’s potato salad for the win! Marilu’s is a local grocery store that has an amazing selection of ready made salads. No need to get stressed out when serving larger crowds.
It’s not a backyard BBQ without our favourite guitarist. He has played for us on many occasions. He plays softly in the background while we eat and then he ramps it up a bit taking requests and inviting us to sing along. Steve is singing Cats and Cradle. He does quite a good job actually….surprisingly! LOL
Dimitri Salad Recipe.
I always end up adding a bit more lemon than what this recipe calls for.
Nothing says Canadian dessert like a delicious, gooey butter tart. You can take your tarts to a whole other level by heating them up and adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Party’s are so much more fun when your friends show up all decked out! This particular photo was from a Canadian party we hosted down south.
Fun idea…start your day with a Canadian inspired charcuterie board.
Happy, happy Canada Day 2023 everyone. Enjoy this special weekend.
