If you’d told me a few years ago that I’d be starting a whole new career in my 60s, let alone running a gym, I would’ve thought you were out of your mind. I mean seriously 😳 , me? Owning a gym? After not working for 20 years! Yet, here I am, diving into something completely new—no dream job, no lifelong passion, just a great opportunity that felt too good to pass up.
Trying something new at any age is a bit of a leap, but in your 60s? It feels like you’re signing up for an adventure where you’re wondering if the parachute will actually open. But sometimes, you just gotta make the jump, right? So here it is…the BIG question that’s been on my mind (and probably yours, too):
Am I Too Old for This?
This is the first thing I asked myself when the opportunity came up. The fitness industry is all about energy, enthusiasm, and hustle—things I’ve done in other areas of my life, but does it apply here? Am I too old to keep up? Here’s what I am hoping…Age won’t be the problem—it will actually be the solution.
I’m not bouncing around like a 25-year-old (I mean, have you seen my knees?), but what I do bring is years of life experience to the table. I know how to connect with people, stay calm when everything’s falling apart, and think on my feet. Plus, I’ve spent enough time in gyms as a member (semi-regular, but who’s counting? 😉 ) to understand what it’s like from the other side.
So, nope. I’m not too old for this. If anything, I’ve got a whole lot of experience in making things happen—whether it’s managing a household or running my own life. Age just means I know how to bend the rules a little and make things work.
Is This Really What I Want to Do?
I get it: starting a new venture isn’t always about chasing a lifelong dream. Sometimes, it’s about grabbing an opportunity that lands in your lap. And this one did. And I’ll be honest, at first, I was like, “Am I sure this is what I want to do?” But once I started thinking about it, I realized how much I love the idea of helping other people crush their goals.
That’s what really excites me—seeing people come in, set a goal, and then actually hit it. The thought of being part of their journey? Now that’s pretty cool. I am all for helping others feel stronger, healthier, and more confident. Plus I know that I personally will become stronger, healthier and more confident too. Isn’t that the healthiest attitude to have towards aging?
What Are People Saying About Me?
The reaction has been a mix of admiration and confusion. A lot of people are like, “You’re brave!” (thanks, I think?), some have said “Good for you, but I could never do that.” and a few have straight-up asked“Are you f*** crazy?” Not gonna lie…I have wondered the same thing.
Here’s the truth: I didn’t start this because I was fearless or looking for fame. I did it because the opportunity just felt right. It was a chance to try something new, push myself, and challenge myself in a way I hadn’t done in years. Maybe some people think it’s crazy, but hey, a little craziness is just a sign that you’re shaking things up, right?
The Perks of Trying Something New Later in Life
Believe it or not, there are some surprisingly awesome perks to starting a new career in your 60s:
1. Perspective: After years of figuring out what really matters, I’m able to focus on building something meaningful—something that makes a difference in other people’s lives.
2. Network: Decades of meeting people means I’ve got a strong network supporting me. I’m not starting from scratch, and that’s a huge advantage.
3. Time: The kids are grown and out of the house. I taught Steve how to use the washer and dryer which means I can pour energy into this new opportunity without worrying about juggling a million other things. 😝
4. Confidence: Life has thrown a lot our way, and together Steve and I survived it all. So now? Failure isn’t as scary as it used to be. I know I can handle whatever comes my way especially with Steve in my corner.
Am I Crazy to Do This?
Maybe a lil’ bit. But honestly, aren’t the best opportunities the ones that make you feel a little bit nuts?
I didn’t dive into this new chapter because it was safe or easy. I did it because it felt like the right challenge for this moment in my life. It wasn’t about finding a dream job—it was about finding an exciting, fresh opportunity that pushed me to grow.
And if you’re thinking about trying something new, no matter your age, my advice is simple: Go for it. The worst thing that could happen is that you try, learn, and grow. The best thing? You might just surprise yourself.
Here’s to new beginnings, even when they don’t look like what you expected!
You can visit www.gymonplains.com for more photos and follow my new blog on that site. (Top right corner tab) I am still getting the kinks out trying to learn a new system 🤦♀️ but by April 1 the blog posts should be a regular – weekly occurrence.

March 15, 2025 at 9:19 AMYou are an inspiration, ML. When making the decision, I made a mental note of all the women I know over 60 who are still working, and you were definitely one of them. The way you show up and do what needs to be done with such grace and always looking like a million bucks is something I truly admire. 💕

March 15, 2025 at 8:33 AMBeautifully said Marion- you do have a way with words! I totally believe that sometime this keeps us young and our minds working. I am older than you – 68 next week and I am still working. Since taking this job three years ago I have done financial reports to the government – created T-4’s and learned how to do Quick Books. I also have the experience and empathy needed to work in a church with all the things that happen there on a daily basis. I don’t know how long I’ll be there but as long as I like what I’m doing I’ll keep it up.

March 15, 2025 at 9:12 AMWell I know who your inspiration is. Nobody did it better than your mom working tirelessly for her church right up to her last months. She was an incredible lady. When the Priest listed all that your mom did for the church I was in complete awe! I think most people there were. She did it all under the radar never asking for anything in return and never expecting accolades for doing anything. That’s the sense that I got anyways. So good for you Anne. It is awesome to hear that you are still working, learning and enjoying it. This is why you don’t look 68! 😉 Have a wonderful weekend Anne and thanks for leaving your comments. I always enjoy reading them.

March 15, 2025 at 9:25 AMCongratulations! It takes real courage to step into something completely new, especially in an industry where most people are younger and more experienced. But if anyone can do it, it’s you. Your determination, work ethic, and willingness to learn will set you apart, and I have no doubt you’ll bring a fresh perspective and a level of leadership that will inspire everyone around you. Running a gym isn’t just about fitness—it’s about building a community, and with your drive and passion, you’re going to make an incredible impact. I can’t wait to see where this new adventure takes you!

March 15, 2025 at 10:08 AMGood heavens girl! You never stop do you? How do you find the time. I love that you taught your husband how to do the laundry…now you need to teach him how to vacuum HA HA. A huge congrats to you. I don’t know you personally but based on what you write you are one smart ‘savvy -aged’ lady and will no doubt do an amazing job with it. Have fun.
Marion

March 15, 2025 at 10:47 AMPlease darling!! 60 is not old. You have a lot of years left. I love that you are throwing yourself out there and trying something new. That is the secret to life right there. I am in my 80’s dear, I work at my church as a receptionist and when I am not working there, I am volunteering. It keeps me active, I am continually learning from a much younger generation, my mind is busy all the time and I am socializing. I don’t think I have time for anything else. You are being very wise. I wish you all the success in the world and hope that you take us all along for the ride. Sending you a hug. 🤗

March 15, 2025 at 10:52 AMHello Nancy. Thank you, thank you!! What an inspiration you are to all of us! I love reading about women crushing it in their savviest years! Good for you. I really love that you said “I am learning from a much younger generation”. So many people close theirs minds off from learning from younger people – they think they know more because they have been around longer. You are wiser than them and they will learn from you too…and isn’t that nice. Generations growing and learning and respecting each other. Makes my heart happy 😊 I wish you a very blessed weekend Nancy. Thank you for sharing a bit about yourself.

March 15, 2025 at 11:42 AMI am SO proud of you Marion and excited to watch you take on this new challenge and tackle it with the tenacity, endless energy and strength like you do everything else. Your warmth and kindness is infectious and I have no doubt people will be drawn to the gym because of you and the culture you create. My only disappointment is that I am not living locally and missing out on your classes. Cheering you on and look forward to reading your updates. P.S. I would charge extra for a class that Tank is participating in 🙂
Marion
March 15, 2025 at 12:24 PMHA HA HA…that just made me laugh out loud!🤣 The funny thing is- it’s true! You absolutely would. 💕 🐕
I do miss you Robyn…but maybe not as much as Tank. Although I have to be honest with you…my neighbour gives him a treat before his bedtime every night. I guess he figured you moved so he started mooching from someone else.
Thank you Robyn for such a beautiful message. I am not sure there are many women that work the hours you do at such a high level. You too, are one of the inspirational women I look up to. You know whenever you are in town you can come visit me at the gym and get a Tanky snuggle.
