1. Bring in Natural Materials
One of the easiest ways to create a warm and inviting fall atmosphere is by adding natural elements and colours to your fall decor. Consider incorporating the following elements:
Wood Accents: Use wooden bowls, trays, or candlesticks to add a rustic, organic feel to your space. Look for interesting pieces with a natural finish that showcases the wood’s grain and texture. Driftwood, reclaimed wood, and branches can also be repurposed into creative DIY projects, like these amazing bowls that my brother makes. No two are the same. Beautiful right?
Woven Textures: Introduce woven baskets, rattan or wicker furniture, and macramé wall hangings to bring in texture and a sense of warmth. These elements add a handcrafted, earthy vibe that pairs perfectly with fall’s cozy aesthetic.
2. Layer with Seasonal Foliage
Foliage is the main attraction of fall, so why not let it take center stage in your home? Incorporate branches, leaves, and greenery to create a dynamic, seasonal display.
Dried Flowers and Grasses: Dried hydrangeas, pampas grass, wheat, and eucalyptus are perfect for fall arrangements. Their muted tones and textures bring a sense of depth and natural beauty to any room. Arrange them in a vase or bundle them with twine for a simple centrepiece.
Fall Leaves: Collect leaves from your yard or local park and use them to decorate your mantle, dining table, or entryway. For an added touch, press and frame a few vibrant leaves to create a unique, seasonal art piece. Who doesn’t love Good Housekeeping for super easy DIY projects. Click HERE for 65 great ideas.
Natural Garlands: Create garlands using pinecones, acorns, seed pods, and other foraged finds. String them together with twine or ribbon and drape them along your staircase, mantel, or doorway for a charming, rustic touch.
3. Infuse Earthy Colours
Fall’s colour palette is rich with earthy tones that evoke feelings of warmth and comfort. Think deep oranges, burnt sienna, mustard yellows, olive greens, and shades of brown. Here’s how to weave these colors into your décor:
Throw Pillows and Blankets: Add throw pillows and blankets in warm, autumnal hues to your sofa or chairs. Choose fabrics like wool, velvet, or knits to create a cozy, layered look. Mix and match patterns—like plaids, florals, and solids—to add interest. I love how this space blends so seamlessly with the forest out back. It’s like I planned it. 😉
Accent Rugs: Lay down an area rug with a pattern or color that reflects fall’s hues. This not only adds warmth to your floors but also anchors your space with seasonal charm.
Table Settings: Use natural-coloured table linens, such as burlap, linen, or cotton, in shades of burnt orange, deep reds, or golden yellows. Pair with wooden chargers, ceramic dinnerware, and metallic accents like copper or brass for a warm, inviting dining experience. These pumpkins are from the Dollar Store. I use them for soup and chilli. You can find the tags I added to the mini loaves 🥖 right HERE
4. Incorporate Harvest Elements
Nothing says fall like the most popular of the harvest season. Bring the outdoors in by using natural elements like pumpkins, gourds, and more:
Pumpkins,Gourds and a Cute Little Girl: Use a mix of pumpkins and gourds in different sizes, shapes, and colours. Arrange them on your porch, mantle, or as a centerpiece on your dining table. Don’t limit yourself to the traditional orange—consider white, green, or heirloom varieties for a more sophisticated look. Lilah looks as if she might waiting for a pumpkin to turn into a coach! LOL 🐁 🏰 👑
Corn Husks and Wheat: Corn husks and bundles of wheat can be used to decorate doorways, windows, or mantels. Tie them with twine or ribbon and place them in vases or baskets for a rustic, farmhouse appeal.
Light Up with Natural Warmth
Lighting plays an essential role in creating a cozy ambiance, especially now that the days grow shorter and evenings longer. Add a soft, warm glow to your home with these ideas:
Candles: Use candles in varying heights and sizes throughout your home. Maybe try fall-inspired scents like cinnamon, clove, pumpkin spice, or apple cider. Cluster them together on trays or within lanterns for a cozy, intimate feel.
Lanterns and String Lights: Place lanterns filled with fairy lights or small LED candles around your porch or patio to create a warm, inviting outdoor space. Indoors, drape string lights around windows, mantels, or mirrors to add a soft, ambient glow.
Fireplace Focus: If you have a fireplace, make it a focal point by adorning the mantel with natural elements like garlands, branches, and candles. Don’t forget to keep a stack of firewood nearby for those chilly evenings when you want to cozy up by the fire…or in this case the flicker! 😂
6. Add Natural Scents
Remember to include natural scents that capture the feeling of fall.
Simmer Pots: Create a simmer pot on the stove with ingredients like cinnamon sticks, cloves, oranges, and apple slices. This simple trick fills your home with ‘William Sonoma’ scent without the price tag. There are so many recipes for simmer pots on line..try this one from Judy Blanner. I am never disappointed by her recipes RECIPE
Herb Bundles: Hang bundles of dried herbs like rosemary, sage, or lavender in the kitchen or living area. Not only do they add a rustic, organic feel, but they also release a subtle, natural fragrance.
By incorporating natural elements and colours into your fall décor, you can create a space that reflects the season’s beauty and brings warmth and comfort to your home. Whether through natural materials, seasonal foliage, harvest elements, or cozy textiles, these thoughtful touches will make your home feel like a true autumn retreat.
