The Art of Me Time: Creating a space just for you.

Creating a space just for you.

In today’s fast-paced world, having a personal space dedicated to your hobby can be a game-changer. Whether you’re into painting, writing, knitting, or any other passion, carving out a corner of your home to indulge in your favourite activities can enhance your creativity. Creating a space just for you provides a much-needed escape from everyday stress and just makes your home so much more enjoyable 💕

It’s no secret that I love my quiet time. Whether I am enjoying my morning coffee and journaling or some afternoon meditation or writing. I love that I was able to create a space to call my own.

It’s probably not what you are thinking either. You are probably picturing a second bedroom that’s maybe been transformed into a sitting room..nope! I need that spare room for the girls. Maybe you are thinking it’s an office space where I can shut the door and get down to business…nope! The office is Steves. It’s not the ‘she cave’ either. I haven’t even started that yet! LOL. Instead I carved out a corner of my small living room that is mine…all mine!! 😂

My space… my office. 😆 Can you picture Steve sitting here? I think not! Lol

I adore my hanging chair. It doesn’t face the TV so I really do use it for simple, quiet time….journaling, meditation, reading and writing. It has everything I want. Plants and flowers. A photo of the girls and a scented candle. A table to hold a couple of journals and a place to park my slippers. I do all my writing on my laptop so I don’t need a full on desk area.  Sometimes I like to sit with my tea and have Tank  hanging out by my feet,  We stare out into the woods watching life go by. (Tank watches the squirrels go by 🐿️)  I call it the art of doing nothing…do you remember that post? Niksen – read it HERE

It’s tricky when you want a space all for yourself but there is no space for it. I am here to show you that you don’t need an extra bedroom or even a large room to carve out a special area to call your own. A tiny little corner is all that it takes.

Often we have a hobby we don’t do because it is just too much of a hassle to pull everything out and get it set up. Or it is out of sight, out of mind.

If you like to paint where do you put it all…the paint, the brushes, your easel and canvases? If you have paint and brushes in a tote in the closet and the canvas in the work room, the easel in the garage… that just isn’t conducive to rolling out a chair and getting at it. I love this before and after of a repurposed buffet-hutch. Honestly…wouldn’t you be so intrigued to learn about  someone’s hobby seeing this set up in their home? This is so much more interesting than china that  you never use.

If you have an extra room that’s great…but it’s not always the case is it? Why not find a window that allows natural light in and set up shop right there. How often do you actually have company over that you’d be uncomfortable with them seeing your hobby set up? I think it makes for a great conversation. What gal-pal isn’t interested in her friend’s hobby?  I actually wish I painted so that I could leave it set up to share with all of my friends.

This would be great storage for a writer or crafter. I am seeing so many friends starting new hobbies these days…sewing, painting and jewelry making to name a few. Creating a space dedicated to your hobby provides instant access and sets you up for success.

This hanging jewelry case would make an excellent storage area for paint/brushes and beads.

Have a look around and see where you can set up shop. Who knows…maybe you really do have a sunny window where you can set up your sewing machine and actually leave it set up….stop making it all so much work…plus you never know who you may inspire.

And can I just mention that IF you don’t have a hobby and Im not talking sports but an actual ‘me time’ hobby you should look into something that excites you. It doesn’t have to be a big lifestyle over haul just something that will foster creativity. This is one of those keys to a healthier life. 😉 you’re welcome.

I love this knitting corner. A simple rolling cart with jars to hold your knitting needles. I like how she added books and a plant to make it special for her.

Here are some tips to help you create the perfect hobby space within your home.

1.Identify Your Needs

Before you start rearranging furniture, take a moment to identify what you truly need for your hobby. Consider the following:
– Space Requirements: How much room do you need? A writer might need just a small desk, while a painter may require a larger area for canvases and supplies.
– Lighting: Natural light is ideal for most hobbies, but ensure you have adequate artificial lighting for evenings or darker days.
– Storage: Think about the materials you use and how best to store them. Shelving, cabinets, and ottomans with storage can help keep everything organized while being attractive too.

2. Choose the Right Location

The location of your hobby space is crucial. It should be a place where you can focus and feel inspired. Consider these options:
– Spare Room: If you have a spare room, this can be transformed into a dedicated hobby space.
– Nook or Corner: A quiet corner of a living room or bedroom can be just as effective.

3. Make It Comfortable

Comfort is key to enjoying your hobby time. Ensure your space includes:
– Comfy Furniture: Invest in a comfortable chair and a desk or table that’s the right height for your activity.
– Personal Touches: Decorate with items that inspire you, such as artwork, photos, or plants.

4. Create a Routine

Having a dedicated space is just the first step. To truly benefit, make your hobby a regular part of your routine:
– Schedule Time: Block out regular time slots in your calendar to enjoy your hobby. Don’t wait for the perfect time. Create that time. It’s important!
– Keep It Ready: Always leave your space ready for the next session to make it easier to dive right back into it.

5. Personalize Your Space

Finally, make the space truly yours:
– Add a cozy blanket, a comfortable rug, or a favourite chair to make the space inviting. Add flowers, candles, your pups & spice and all things nice 🐕 whatever makes you smile. 😊

Creating a personal space just for you and your hobby within your home is an investment in your well-being and creativity. By thoughtfully selecting the right location, organizing your supplies, and personalizing the area, you can craft a sanctuary that enhances your hobby experience. Remember, this space is all about you! It doesn’t have to be grandiose —just make it a place where you can truly relax and let your creativity flow.

WOW…food for thought! This is really making me rethink where I should set up my sewing machine. I am one of those people that has a hutch full of dishes I rarely use. In fact I rarely use the dining room at all. I love the idea of transforming my hutch and stacking all my material and pretty ribbon behind the glass doors. You are so right about it creating a conversation piece in your house. Thanks for this. I really needed to see this.

Hello Sarah. Thanks for stopping in. YES YES YES!!! Set up your hutch as a sewing center!! Having pretty fabrics and notions on display will be so pretty. You can change out your fabrics seasonally. You can still have some plates and cups on display…maybe fill some tea cups with different colours of thread and buttons and such. What a conversation piece it would be!!! Have fun with it. Glad to have helped. Have a great day. 😊

Can I just say how much I love your swing? I see photos of them in magazines all the time. 💗 This entire blog is making me think about how to utilize an entire corner that I have in my family room where a large plants sits. I would never have thought about a swing chair because like you mentioned mine wouldn’t face our TV either. Thanks Savvy. Great post. I am inspired.

HAHA..yes, you CAN say how much you love my swing 😆 To be honest the only other thing I could have put in that corner was another shelf of some sort that I dont need or want or like you have…a plant. I have wanted a chair like this for some time so it was a no brainer for me to dedicate an unused corner for one. I am so happy you have been inspired. Have fun creating your own little piece of heaven.

That chair of yours is amazing. Is that a wallpaper in a frame behind the chair? It is very pretty. My hobby is painting and I am someone that puts it all away when I am done. I shouldn’t. I should leave it out. I DO have space for a small table in front of a window. I have been on Pinterest looking at set ups since I read your blog this morning. I am doing it!!! I can’t wait. It will make for interesting conversations when friends come over and see my work out on an easel. Awesome post Marion.

Thanks Kay. Behind the chair i had a large frame installed on the wall so that I could put up wallpaper in whatever colour or style I fancy at the time. This is nothing more than one single strip of peel & stick. Very simple to put up. I actually had the frame built to the width of a roll of paper. I love that I am not committing to anything long term. I hope you find exactly what you are looking for on Pinterest. That is where I got all the pics from for this post. Enjoy your space and your hobby…i really need to learn how to pain! 😆
