How to Host a Charming Mother’s Day Tea
There’s something timeless and lovely about gathering for tea, especially when it’s to honour the women who raised, loved, and inspired us. This Mother’s Day, why not host a tea party filled with warmth, laughter, and beautiful details that make everyone feel special? You can have a small gathering with your own mom and siblings or invite extended families too. It doesnt have to be all about tea either. I hosted this Mar-TEA-ni party at Christmas time. You could easily do it for Mother’s Day.
A few years ago I hosted a tea party for my mom and my sister in laws mom. We had quite a room full of young ladies and shared lots of memories. I am so glad I did it, my sister in laws mom passed away this year at the grand old age of 100!!!
Here are some super easy ideas whether it’s a cozy gathering in your home, or a garden affair on the patio, (if you are local it will be 61 and sunny 😎)
1. Set the Scene with Simple Elegance
A tea party doesn’t need to be fancy to feel special. Pull out the good dishes or mix-and-match china if you have it. I did a full blog on mixing patterns HERE, a few linen napkins, and fresh flowers. Think pastels, soft florals, or vintage touches. A small vase of tulips or wildflowers adds instant charm.
Tip: If you’re outside, string up fairy lights or use a few candles for added ambiance. Add a pretty throw blanket over the backs of a few chairs to keep it even cozier. I added a string of beads over the backs of these rented chairs for some extra bling.
2. Create a Thoughtful Menu
Keep it light and lovely, especially if you are making all the food on your own. Think finger foods and sweet treats that feel indulgent but not fussy. AKA grocery stores finds! 😂 If you want a more professional Mother’s Day tea why not try my friend Jackie The High Tea Trolley if you are local? I have used her many times and she never disappoints.
Savoury ideas:
- Cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches – so simple to make, remember to cut the crusts off like they do in the magazines.
- Mini quiches or egg salad tartlets – you can buy these in the freezer section
- Cheese and fruit platter – get a ready-made platter from the grocery store.
Sweet treats:
- Scones with clotted cream and jam – this is where Jackie comes in really handy lol.
- Lemon bars or shortbread – short bread from the cookie section for the win! 😂
- Mini cupcakes or petit fours – many grocery stores have minis or try a local bakery.
Drinks:
- A selection of teas (herbal, black, and green)
- Lemon water or iced tea
- A splash of Prosecco or sparkling rosé if you’re feeling festive – I will be enjoying a fine CC/ginger 🥃 that Steve will make me! 😉
3. Add Personal Touches
- Handwritten place cards or a simple note at each setting with a favourite quote about motherhood. Google some quotes…so much easier than hurting your noodle thinking. 🤔
- A playlist of soft, nostalgic music in the background (I created a playlist below – your’re welcome)
- A tea blend party favour in a small jar or sachet for guests to take home. If you are up for a quick DIY why not make THESE super easy candles I did for Easter? Wrap them in cellophane and tie them with some pretty ribbon.
4. Make It Meaningful
Ask everyone to write a favourite story about their mom and place it in a jar. Moms can take their jar home and read when having some quiet time. I think this would be such a warm touch. 💕 I wish I had of thought of this when I hosted my tea party.
If you have little ones attending, have them create handmade cards or drawings to gift the moms at the table—or ask them to write what they love the most about their nana. It’ll melt every heart or crack them up. Years ago Savannah was asked to write her favourite things and she said she loved going to her nana’s place because she was allowed to sleep on the floor. 😂 We have no idea why she said that.
5. Keep It Relaxed
Above all, let this be a time to slow down. No rushing, no fussing—just sipping, chatting, and celebrating the beautiful women around the table.
For Those Without a Mom This Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day can be tender for those whose moms are no longer here or whose relationships are complicated. If that’s you, know that this day can still be meaningful. Consider hosting a tea with a friend, a sister, a daughter, or even just for yourself. Celebrate the women who have mothered you in other ways, or create space to honor your own nurturing spirit. A beautiful table, comforting tea, and heartfelt conversation are just as special when shared with chosen family—or in peaceful solitude with a journal and soft music. This day is yours, too.
A Gentle Journaling Prompt for Mother’s Day
If you’re spending the day on your own—or choosing to honor it in a quieter way—take a moment to reflect with this journaling prompt. Brew your favorite tea, find a cozy spot, and give yourself permission to write freely:
Prompt:
“Today, I honor the women who have shaped me—whether through love, lessons, or lasting memories. I also honor the nurturing parts of myself. Here’s what I want to remember, feel, and carry forward…”
Write as much or as little as you need. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection, healing, and acknowledging the beauty in your own story.
Tea Time Playlist – Perfect for Mother’s Day – I listened to a lot of songs to come up with this list. 🎶
1. “La Vie En Rose” – Édith Piaf
Timeless and romantic, this French classic sets the perfect tone.
2. “Here Comes the Sun” – The Beatles
Light and uplifting—just like a spring day.
3. “What a Wonderful World” – Louis Armstrong
A sweet reminder of life’s beauty.
4. “The Way I Am” – Ingrid Michaelson
Simple and heartfelt, perfect for a gentle moment.
5. “Dream a Little Dream of Me” – Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong
Soft jazz with a vintage flair.
6. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” – Kina Grannis (Acoustic Cover)
A delicate version of a love song everyone knows.
7. “Fields of Gold” – Eva Cassidy
A beautiful, peaceful ballad with meaning and soul.
8. “Tea for Two” – Doris Day
A playful nod to the theme.
9. “Make You Feel My Love” – Adele (or Bob Dylan’s original)
Tender and sincere—lovely as background.
10. “Come Away With Me” – Norah Jones
Smooth, soulful, and relaxing.
11. “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” – Stevie Wonder
Joyful and full of love.
12. “Your Song” – Elton John
Sentimental and classic.
13. “She” – Elvis Costello
Romantic and evocative—great for honoring mothers.
14. “Home” – Phillip Phillips
Warm and upbeat, especially if the gathering is at home.
15. “Over the Rainbow” – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
A dreamy, ukulele-driven version that brings calm and hope.
Hosting a Mother’s Day tea is less about perfection and more about presence. It’s a gift of time and attention, served with a splash of tea and a whole lot of love. Whether it’s for your mom, your sister, a friend, or yourself—you deserve to be celebrated.

May 6, 2025 at 5:00 PMThanks Elaine. I am not doing a tea for Mother’s Day this year. I am going to help my mom with her garden and get all her plantings done for her. It’s always fun meeting my brothers there getting down and dirty in the garden. We all go back in time and I seriously feel that I am 10 years old again. We know each other so well and have the same crazy sense of humour
Happy Mothers Day Elaine.

May 6, 2025 at 5:40 PMMarion. First of all this is beautiful. I love your menu choices and your personal comments make me laugh. You have such a way of writing. I truly enjoy your blog posts. I too love your music choices and appreciate the work that obviously went into choosing those songs… You really have a magic touch with decor. The pearls on the backs of the chairs is perfect but I also noticed on one of table settings you have small green bottles with a single tulip in each. So pretty. 😍 You have a lucky mom although that’s probably who you learned all of this from. God Bless and happy Mother’s Day to you.
