I think life after 60 changes the way we experience summer in the best possible way.
Life after 60 has taught me that the best moments are rarely the big ones. Sometimes they look more like puppy yoga, fresh flowers, sore Pilates muscles and a Retriever covered in dirt at a garden centre.
There’s something about the first long weekend of summer in Canada that just feels different.
The gardens wake up. Patio chairs come back out. Windows are open again. People suddenly start saying things like “we should really do more this summer” as if we’ve all just emerged from seasonal hibernation….which if you were home all winter you pro’ly did just come out of hibernation lol
I think a lot of women over 60 are craving this right now. Not more pressure. Not bigger goals. Just more presence in everyday life.
Today was one of those days that completely filled my heart.
Teaching New Women Pilates Never Gets Old
This morning I taught three ladies Pilates for their very first time at Pilates on Plains Studio & Spa.
They were nervous when they walked in, which is so normal, but by the end of class we were smiling, laughing, and they are already talking about coming back.
I love that about my studio.
There’s something really special about introducing women to movement in a way that makes them feel strong instead of intimidated. Watching that confidence kick in, even just a little bit, genuinely grows my heart every single time.
For so many women over 60, trying something new can feel overwhelming. That’s why I love creating spaces where women feel comfortable enough to simply begin.
Then this afternoon I went to puppy yoga.
Which, for the record, was every bit as adorable and chaotic as you would imagine.
Tiny puppies tumbling over each other while grown women completely lose all dignity trying to hold a downward dog pose while cuddling little fluff balls. Honestly… 10 out of 10 experience.
By the time I left, I was fully convinced that I needed a new puppy in my life.
That was until this happened.
Puppy Yoga and Complete Garden Centre Chaos
After puppy yoga, Tank came with me to the garden centre.
There’s a little girl there who works with her mom. She can’t be more than ten years old and she absolutely adores Tank.
Every single time we go in, it’s the same thing.
“TANK!!! I missed you!”
Before I can even answer, she takes the leash from me so I can wander around the nursery hands free while she proudly walks him around letting him sniff everything.
Tank loves the attention.
I always give her five dollars afterward and tell her what a great job she did because she takes her role very seriously.
Well…..
Today everything was going beautifully until suddenly it absolutely was not.
I’m still not entirely sure what happened, but somehow Tank’s leash wrapped itself around one of those tall plant stands with flowers balanced precariously on top.
Which caused one table to topple.
Which caused another table to wobble.
Which caused the little girl to shriek.
Which caused Tank to panic.
Oh dear God….within seconds there was full blown pandemonium in the nursery.
Plants crashing.
Dirt flying.
Flower pots rolling across the floor.
Tables sideways.
And right in the middle of it all was Tank… frozen… with a blob of dirt sitting on top of his head and a facial expression that clearly said:
“Wasn’t me.”
The owners looked at me.
Then at their daughter.
Then at Tank.
… they burst out laughing.
We all started picking up plants and brushing dirt off tables while Tank somehow managed to come out of the entire situation smelling like roses… literally… while being handed treats like he was the hero of the story.
Honestly, it was one of those moments that turns into a family story before you even leave the parking lot.
Life After 60 Feels Different in Summer
And by the time I got home tonight, I realized something. This is exactly what Celebrate Life with Grace is really about. Not having everything perfectly figured out or sitting down to write long emotional journal entries every day. It’s about paying attention to your actual life while it’s happening. The funny moments, the messy moments, the completely unplanned moments that somehow become the stories you laugh about later. The little things that would normally get rushed past because we’re already onto the next task, the next responsibility, the next thing on the list. Somewhere along the way, especially as women, we get so busy managing life that we forget to fully notice it while we’re in it. And honestly, I think those ordinary imperfect moments are often the best parts of all.
…as women
I sometimes think we spend so much time organizing, helping, working, planning, caregiving, multitasking, worrying, fixing and moving on to the next thing that sometimes entire seasons pass before we realize we never really stopped long enough to enjoy them.
Today, for once, I actually felt like I stopped long enough to notice it all.
I got so much accomplished.
The backyard is starting to look fresh and clean again. The furniture is washed, the seat cushions are back out, and the planters are filled with bright annuals that instantly make everything feel alive again. It’s amazing what a little colour can do for your mood after a long Canadian winter.
Tomorrow promises sunshine and 21 degrees. A perfect day and I don’t plan on doing much.
I plan on sitting outside with my feet up, Tank by my side and completely absorbing all the wonderful things about my life that are already right here in front of me.
Why I Created Celebrate Life with Grace
Celebrate Life with Grace is a guided journaling workbook for women over 60 designed to help women slow down, reflect, and reconnect with the everyday moments that often get rushed past during busy life transitions.
That’s really where this guided journal came from.
Not from some giant life crisis.
But from wanting to remember my own life better while I’m living it.
The garden mornings.
Coffee outside.
Pilates classes.
Puppy yoga.
Dirty hands.
Summer evenings.
And even… rescuing my silly mutt from garden centre chaos.
Maybe this summer doesn’t need to be about reinventing ourselves. Maybe that’s one of the gifts of life after 60… finally learning how to notice the life we already have. Maybe that’s enough. 🌿

May 17, 2026 at 5:44 AMThis is such a sweet story. You tell it in a way that I can actually see it all happening!! Hahahahha. Thankfully the owner of the nursery has a sense of humour.
Your message is loud and clear too Savvy. I am looking forward to taking hour journaling course.
